The Sulphur Springs Animal Shelter held their adoption event at the Backstory Brewery Saturday, July 16, adopting out three of six blue healer puppies. The Backstory Brewery adoption event was the first time all six siblings were able to play together outside.

“I love having these events at the brewery because it’s fenced in,” said Blanch, “the dogs get to be dogs…they get to run and play and meet people on their terms.” Lacking room to run and play at the shelter, the facility has yet to meet the standards for hosting on-site events.

The shelter will now be holding their monthly adoption event at the Backstory Brewery every third Saturday. Potentially bypassing the month of August due to the heat, the event will kick back up on Sept. 17 from noon to 5 p.m. when temperatures cool off. Yet, the delay may help the shelter improve their need for volunteers — something the shelter needs in order to support the adoption event.

“Currently, there are not enough volunteers to help,” said Barbi Blanch, Animal Control Officer and Supervisor of the Sulphur Springs Animal Shelter. Solely dependent on volunteers, the adoption events require help from the community. Running the city animal shelter can be a hard job and it is beneficial for residents to participate in volunteering both for events and at the shelter facility.

Instead of waiting until September, if you are interested in adopting an animal now, there are two healer pups and one hound pup awaiting adoption. If you are looking to adopt a cat, there are a couple of kittens available, orange and black. Other adoptable animals include several dogs: Carter, Weave, Brandy, Brandon, Sheba and a Doberman pinsher named Dobby.
