Delmarva Sports History: Delino DeShields

SEAFORD, Del. – In this edition of ‘Delmarva Sports History’ we highlight the accomplishments of one of the greatest athletes from the area.

Delino DeShields was born in Seaford where we went on to play baseball and basketball for the Blue Jays. He was an All-American in both sports and was committed to play basketball for Villanova.

Those plans changed after being selected 12th overall in the MLB Draft of 1987. He chose to forego college and signed with the Montreal Expos.

DeShields stole 463 bases in his career with the Expos, Dodgers, Cardinals, Cubs, and Orioles.

He made an appearance with the Delmarva Shorebirds on a rehab assignment in 1999. DeShields thrilled the home fans at Perdue Stadium with a home run.

He is now the first base coach with the Cincinnati Reds in MLB. His son, Delino, played in Major League Baseball for the past seven seasons. His daughter, Diamond, plays with the Chicago Sky in the WNBA where she won a title in 2021.
