NOW: Early morning shooting wounds three in Benton Township

BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Benton Charter Township Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at the Berrien Homes Apartments at around 2 a.m. on Monday morning.

According to investigators, a 25-year old female, a 20-year old male, and a 17-year old were wounded when at least two groups of people opened fire on each other in the parking lot of the 1700 block of the complex.

All three victims were taken to Lakeland Hospital, where their wounds were determined to be non-life threatening.

Investigators are unsure of the cause of the gunfight, and neighbors are afraid to publicly speak up out of fear of retaliation.

Several cars were also shot up during the exchange.

Residents are frustrated over a lack of police response to the frequent shootings at Berrien Homes, although they did note that it had been two months since the last shooting at the housing complex.

There are currently no suspects in custody.

Anyone with information related to this shooting is encouraged to call the Benton Charter Township Police Department's Detective Bureau at (269) 925-1135 or Michiana Crime Stoppers at (574) 288-STOP.
