LAWRENCE — Kansas men’s basketball head coach Bill Self and assistant coach Kurtis Townsend didn't participate in recruiting on the road in June and July, according to multiple reports.

According to CBS Sports, the two “were held off the road for the live recruiting period” and “subject to self-imposed sanctions from Kansas” as the NCAA infractions case concerning the team continues. The Kansas City Star confirmed the move was “not anything mandated by the NCAA.”

Whether this will lessen any possible penalties that come at the resolution of the case, which is being handled through the Independent Accountability Resolution Process, is something to consider.

“I’ve been hopeful, that in 2022, we were going to be able to move past that,” Kansas athletic director Travis Goff said about the case earlier this month. “And we’re halfway home on 2022, so it remains to be seen.”

Kansas men's basketball head coach Bill Self has been held off the road for the live recruiting period as the NCAA case concerning Kansas’ men’s basketball team has continued.

The case has been ongoing since 2019, when the NCAA accused Kansas’ men’s basketball team of five Level I violations and highlighted what was described as lack of institutional control and alleged head coach responsibility. Self and Townsend were included in the allegations, among others, and have denied them.

It’s been since July 1, 2020, that the case has been referred to the IARP.

Goff started in his role as athletic director in 2021. He acknowledged the possibility that the case might not be completed prior to the start of the team’s 2022-23 season. He didn't provide any further update about the case when asked about it during the Big 12 Conference’s media days for football.

“Kansas is still awaiting its critical and long-overdue hearing with the IARP's decision makers,” the CBS Sports report stated.

Norm Roberts and Jeremy Case, two other assistant coaches for the Jayhawks, have been recruiting away from campus. There has also been recruiting happening on campus.
