BALTIMORE — Friday night was bittersweet for the Yankees.
A lot of the satisifaction from being the Baltimore Orioles 7-6 was lost with the news that standout reliever Michael King suffering a season-ending injury.
Pitching in the eighth inning, King fractured a bone in his pitching elbow.
The Yankees did their best to reinforce their bullpen in quick fashion by on Saturday by recalling Clarke Schmidt and selecting the contract of veteran Shane Greene. Both right-handers joined the Yankees from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and will be available to pitch in Saturday night’s game at Oriole Park.
The Yankees opened up roster spots by placing King on the 60-day injured list and optioning outfielder Tim LoCastro to Triple-A.
Greene, 33, is a former All-Star closer who signed a minor-league deal with the Yankees on May 26 after being released by the Los Angeles Dodgers a week earlier. He was 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 15 outings with Scranton, allowing nine runs in 21 innings with 22 strikeouts and eight walks.
The 6-foot-4, 200 pounder has a 4.50 ERA over 342 big-league games in nine seasons, one of the appearances coming this season for the Dodgers.
