Ryan Garcia plans to be a personal gadfly to Gervonta Davis.

The 23-year-old lightweight contender from Victorville, California, has made it clear he wants nothing more than a showdown with Baltimore hard-hitter Davis. Garcia became more emboldened about that match-up after his sixth-round stoppage of Javier Fortuna last Saturday night at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Promotional divisions, however, make that fight unlikely at the present time. Davis is backed by Premier Boxing Champions, which has exclusive broadcasting deals with Showtime and Fox, while Garcia is promoted by Golden Boy, which deals exclusively with DAZN, the streaming platform.

Asked how he intends to get in the ring with Davis (27-0, 25 KOs), Garcia said he plans to take an “old school approach,” which is to say, to be flat-out annoying.

Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) hopes that his incessant crowing about the fight will pressure Davis, 27, into fighting him, at least so far as public support is concerned.

“I mean I’m gonna go old school on him, if I have to,” Garcia said on BBC 5 Live Boxing. “I’m goin’ right to his camp, I’m bugging him every moment I get, each chance I get. I’m callin’ him out. I’m making it very clear my intentions. I feel like the only way I can get him in the ring is to make the right chess moves to make sure he fights me. There has to be a way.

“Maybe I put him in a position where the fans give him no choice to fight me. Either way I want that fight.”

Garcia, who like Davis, has crossover appeal, said he expects to put a beatdown on his rival should they ever get to swap punches.

“I’m gonna whoop him really bad and I’mma make that look even easier than Fortuna,” Garcia said. “I’mma piece Gervonta up to the point where it doesn’t even look like he belongs in the ring with me. It wouldn’t even look competitive. I promise you that. I’ll make it look very easy. It won’t be easy, but I’ll make it look very easy.”
