Celtic boss responds to Matt O’Riley to Leicester City rumours

Celtic finished the 2021/22 season as the champions of Scotland as well as the Scottish League Cup winners. The Hoops have done very well in the summer transfer window too. Not only have they managed to add new players like Alexandro Bernabei, Benjamin Siegrist, Aaron Mooy and Moritz Jenz to reinforce the squad, but they have also kept hold of players like Jota, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Daizen Maeda, by signing them permanently after brilliant loan spells.

It was only in January that Matt O’Riley arrived at Parkhead, but it looks like he is already attracting the interest of some clubs from the Premier League.

Recent rumours have suggested that O’Riley is one of the names on the radar Leicester City, who are managed by former Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers.

Interest from Premier League clubs is always a cause for worry, if you want to keep hold of a player. But Ange Postecoglou does not seem to be too concerned about things at the moment. As reported by Football Scotland, the Celtic manager said about the O’Riley to Leicester City rumours:

"“I encourage it. If big clubs want our players that’s great. It’s means they are going well. I keep saying to the boys, they don’t need to worry about their futures if they are the best they can be today. That kind of stuff doesn’t come on my radar so I don’t worry about it.“I’m not seen anything from Matt to suggest he’s thinking about these things.“The players know why big clubs might come in for them. It’s not because we’ve given them publicity – it’s the work they do, day in and day out.”"

Since joining the club, O’Riley has been impressive. There were question marks about whether he would be able to make the adjustment to Celtic, having come from League One side, MK Dons, but it has not taken the Danish youth international long to prove his doubters wrong.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, O’Riley made 20 appearances in all competitions for Celtic last season, registering 4 goals and 2 assists.

His current deal with the club runs till the summer of 2026 and he is believed to be the successor to Tom Rogic at Parkhead, with the Australian leaving at the end of last season. As a result, it is very difficult to see Celtic letting him go anytime soon unless a ridiculous offer is received.
