This One California Restaurant Made the World’s 50 Best List

Hint: It's in wine country.

In a crowded field of standout dining destinations, just one West Coast establishment made the prestigious list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, announced this week.

Healdsburg’s SingleThread, helmed by husband and wife team Kyle and Katina Connaughton, ranked No. 50 for its “first-class Japanese hospitality set deep in picture-perfect Californian wine country,” according to The World’s 50 Best website.

Two other United States restaurants made the cut: Atomix (No. 33) and Le Bernardin (No. 44), both in New York.

The Connaughtons offer 11-course tasting menus at their restaurant, which has three Michelin stars and is located just seven miles from a sweeping farm, organic fruit orchard, and beehives surrounded by grape vines, where many of their ingredients are grown.

At the Sonoma Valley restaurant, you can expect dishes like black cod mushi nabe wrapped in komatsuna leaves, or tomatoes and strawberries served with black sesame and sheep’s milk ricotta. There’s also an onsite inn where visitors who stay in the 700-square-foot suite or guest rooms can partake in multi-course donabe hot pot dinners right in the comfort of their own rooms.

This past spring, the Connaughtons also opened a new plant-based hot spot called Little Saint in a Ken Fulk-designed restaurant, bar, cafe, and wine shop.

“We live here, farm here, and are part of the community of amazing winemakers, farmers, and artisans,” Kyle said in a release about the opening of Little Saint. “Having more casual food options using local ingredients, live music, art, speakers, and visiting chefs we hope is really something special that everyone can enjoy.”
