Vermont State Police have identified Detective Sgts. Jesse Robson and Samuel Truex as the troopers who fired at Matthew Davis, a person of interest in the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend Mary Anderson.

Brattleboro Police Patrol Officer Ryder Carbone also fired his department-issued shotgun during the encounter with Davis, state police said.

Around 7:45 p.m. police fired at Davis when he pulled a knife and lunged at officers following a short foot pursuit, according to the state police.

Davis, 34, of Fitchburg died following the shooting in West Brattleboro Tuesday night.

The officers were approaching Davis to speak to him about Anderson’s death.

Anderson, of Harvard, was found dead by Brattleboro police inside her blue Toyota Tacoma truck, which had been sought as part of the missing-persons investigation, on Elliot Street just before 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Truex and Robson, who fired their department-issued handguns, will be placed on paid administrative leave for a minimum of five days, in line with state police protocol when it comes to critical incidents, according to the state police.

Both troopers have worked for the state police for over two decades.

Robson has worked for the state police since 2001 when he was assigned to the Shaftsbury, VT Barracks, according to state police.

In 2012, he was promoted to sergeant and patrol commander. Then in 2018 he was transferred to the Bureau of Criminal Investigations out of Westminster as a detective sergeant.

Truex started working as a trooper assigned to the Rutland, VT Barracks in 1998. In 2008 he became a detective trooper before being promoted to sergeant two years later. He has spent time in Rutland and at State Police Headquarters working in the polygraph unit, according to the state police.

He is currently assigned to the Major Crime Unit-South.

Carbone, the Brattleboro police officer involved in the shooting, is on paid administrative leave.

While the fatal shooting is under investigation, the investigation into Anderson’s disappearance and death is ongoing.

Autopsies of both Anderson and Davis by the Vermont Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington were planned for Wednesday, but that work is not expected to be finished before Thursday now, according to the state police.

The state police are looking to speak to anyone in New England — specifically Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont — who might have seen Anderson, Davis or her truck between late Saturday night and early Tuesday morning.

Anderson drove a blue 2017 Toyota Tacoma with Massachusetts license plate PC 8DXW20.

Investigators are also trying to determine what if any connection Anderson and Davis have to Brattleboro, according to the state police.
