Greg McElroy knows what it takes to play quarterback in the SEC, having led the Alabama Crimson Tide to the 2009 national championship.

Since McElroy’s days in Tuscaloosa, the Tide have produced some great quarterbacks, including last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, Bryce Young.

On Wednesday at SEC Media Days, McElroy ranked his top 5 quarterbacks in the conference on “SEC Now,” starting with the returning Heisman winner:

  1. Bryce Young, Alabama
  2. Stetson Bennett IV, Georgia
  3. Spencer Rattler, South Carolina
  4. Hendon Hooker, Tennessee
  5. KJ Jefferson, Arkansas

Having Bennett at No. 2 is higher than most other analysts have the reigning title winner. Meanwhile, McElroy’s list didn’t include guys like Mississippi State’s Will Rogers, Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson.

It’s safe to say the quarterback position is very deep in the SEC this year.
