Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Pull a Real-Life Ted Lasso in Welcome to Wrexham Trailer

The actors take ownership of a struggling football club in the new FX docuseries.
  • Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bring Ted Lasso to life in FX docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, which follows the duo as they learn how to run a football club.

Welcome to Wrexham tracks Reynolds and McElhenney's journey after purchasing Welsh football team Wrexham AFC in 2020. Wrexham is the world's third-oldest professional football club, located in a working-class town in North Wales, UK. Along with the team's on-field management, Reynolds and McElhenney must work together to revive the struggling team and return it to its former glory.

When the duo purchased the Wrexham AFC Red Dragons, they were a fifth-tier team, and neither Reynolds nor McElhenney had any prior experience in football, or even working with each other.

"From Hollywood to Wales, from the pitch to the locker room, the front office to the pub, Welcome to Wrexham will track Rob and Ryan's crash course in football club ownership and the inextricably connected fates of a team and a town counting on two actors to bring some serious hope and change to a community that could use it," reads FX's official description.

Released Wednesday, the trailer offers a glimpse into Reynolds and McElhenney's efforts to connect with the larger community. When a young boy asks what drew them to Wrexham, McElhenney responds, "We had no direct connection. It was just a feeling."

Or as Ted Lasso might say, they just "believed."

Welcome to Wrexham premieres August 24 on FX and streams next-day on Hulu.
