Presentation on Burlington Island at Grundy Library

Learn about the island’s history on Aug. 6

Source: Friends of Burlington Island

Friends of Burlington Island are sharing Burlington Island’s rich history during a presentation at the Grundy Library on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 11:30 a.m.

Beginning with Burlington Island’s habitation by the Lenape people, including a later settlement by Dutch, Swedish and English occupiers and eventually Quakers, attendees will understand the island’s journey from historic times to present day. There will be an island-related activity for children.

Judy Gauntt, along with Dawn and Jim McCreary, FOBI members, will explain how the island became the first European settlement along the Delaware River in the 1600s to recent efforts removing 98,000 pounds of metal waste that accumulated on the island for decades.

Attendees will not only learn some local history, they’ll also enjoy the scenery of the island and river given the library’s proximity directly across the Delaware River from Burlington Island.
