Former Middletown football coach Brett Myers said the need to return to coaching was strong, so the man who led the Blue Raiders to three straight PIAA finals is officially back on the sidelines.

Myers gained school board approval Monday and secured the top post at Twin Valley High School in Elverson.

He’ll guide the Raiders into a new District 3 landscape with Berks County programs merging into the now 37-team Lancaster-Lebanon League.

“I’m excited to get back into coaching and work with the kids. The year away was just a reminder of how I enjoy working with kids and being on the field,” said Myers, who resigned his post at Middletown in December, 2020.

Myers serves as assistant principal at Twin Valley Middle School and was pulling double-duty as athletic director.

“We’re still a young program but, coming off last year, we are hoping to build off that.”

Under first-year head coach Kris Olsen, Twin Valley qualified for the District 3 5A playoffs for the first time in school history. The Raiders (6-5) lost to Spring Grove 33-6 in the opening round.

Olsen’s job was opened just weeks ago, and Myers decided the timing was right to apply.

Twin Valley will compete as a 4A program for the next two seasons. Among the team’s top returners is quarterback and son, Evan Myers.

Evan Myers, a sophomore, threw for 1,454 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions in his rookie campaign. He also added five rushing touchdowns.

“He’s like any of my other kids,” Myers said.

“I told parents for 15 years that I’m going to treat every kid like my own. He’ll get corrected and we’ll go from there. It’s a competitive section with new challenges and perhaps new rivalries.”

Twin Valley will compete against Daniel Boone, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Fleetwood, Garden Spot and Solanco in Section 3.

Myers, a 1993 Middletown graduate, went 73-22 over eight seasons with the Blue Raiders, who won three District 3 3A titles under his watch. The 2016 district title, a program first since 1988, kickstarted a run of three straight.

Prior to Middletown, Myers made stops at Exeter and Pottstown. Twin Valley is set to open the season August 26 at Schuylkill Valley.

“We are going to work hard and we hope that people come out and see us,” Myers said.
