Honorees are people born in Nebraska, who gained prominence while living in the state, or whose success can be attributed to their time living in Nebraska. They must also have been dead for over 35 years to be considered.

A commissioned bust of the honoree is put on display in the Nebraska State Capitol.

The first hearing was held in Lincoln on Monday.

Two more hearings will be held this month in Omaha and Holdrege.
