Remembering Mollie Tibbetts four years after her disappearance
July 18 marks four years since Mollie Tibbets went missing while out for a run in Brooklyn, Iowa. After weeks of searching, authorities located her body in a rural Poweshiek County cornfield.
She was studying psychology and had a passion for child mental health services. She enjoyed participating in theater and the University of Iowa Dance Marathon.
Mollie’s Movement kickstarted multiple events in Mollie’s memory. One event included sending 15,000 cards as a random act of kindness. Mollie’s Movement has also created a Facebook page to help locate other missing individuals.
The annual Mollie’s Memorial Run was started to finish her final run.
"She really liked running," said Scott Tibbetts, Mollie Tibbetts’ brother. "So having an event where we can run on her route and do something she enjoyed while also raising money for a cause she liked is a great way to remember her."
The search for the 20-year-old University of Iowa student sparked national attention. Last summer, her case was resolved in court when Cristhian Bahena Rivera was found guilty of first-degree murder.
The judge who sentenced Bahena Rivera to life in prison said he had "forever changed the lives" of those who loved Mollie.
Mollie's family has established a memorial fund in Mollie's name. It will fund mental health services for kids and teens at the Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.
