With no truck racing, Stewart Friesen wins Utica-Rome and Fonda in his modified

With the NASCAR Truck Series idle this weekend, Steward Friesen hopped into his Halmar modified and won feature races at Utica-Rome Friday and Fonda on Saturday night.

The twin victories netted the Sprakers racer $7,400 and it started Friday evening at Utica-Rome when he collected his 61st career feature triumph at this half-mile Vernon oval. Billy Decker, Alan Johnson, Matt Sheppard and Rocky Warner completed the top five finishers in the non-stop feature race.

Utica-Rome comes right back Thursday night with a 61-lap, Richie Evans Remembered Tribute Race for Short track Super Series Modifieds that’s worth $6,100 to win.

Saturday night at Fonda, Friesen spun out on the second lap and went to the back of the field. He then raced back through the pack and picked up the $4,000 win. Rocky Warner, Demetrios Drellos and Jessica Friesen trailing.

ORDWAY JR. SETTING RECORDS: In the last week, Mike Ordway Jr. has raced three times and set three straight track speed records in his Clyde Booth-owned winged supermodified.

On July 9 at Oswego, Ordway set a new track record and went on to his first Oswego feature win. This Friday night at the winged super show at the Berlin (Michigan) Speedway, he set his second straight track speed record, but ran into motor problems in the feature race and dropped out. Kyle Edwards won that forty lap main event.

Saturday night at Berlin, this Windham, Maine racer broke his own track mark from Friday and then went on to win the 60-lap main event. Trent Stephens, Kyle Edwards, Mike McVetta and Otto Sitterly followed.

WILD ENDING: Saturday’s 100-lap Whelen Modified Tour special on the New Hampshire Speedway mile oval saw Buffalo’s Patrick Emerling leading Eric Goodale and Kyle Bonsignore coming down for the checkered flag on the final lap.

But the lead trio tangled and spun out and Anthony Nocella came from fourth place to take away the win.

A similar situation occurred at Oswego Speedway in the finish of the 350 super main event Saturday night. Dalton Doyle and Brian Sobus were battling for the win when New England’s Jeffrey Battle put on a strong closing rush and crossed the line in a virtual dead heat with Doyle.

A recheck of the scoring transponders found that Doyle had nipped Battle by five one-thousands of a second.

The fifty-lap Oswego supermodified finale saw Ohio’s Dave Shullick Jr. cruise to a dominating victory, with Jeff Abold second. Fulton firefighter, Jack Patrick ended up third for his first-ever podium finish.

Shullick Jr. established a new Oswego supermod track record of 15.627 seconds in the pre-race time trials.

Danny Kapuscinski continued his domination of small-block supermodified racing at Oswego by getting his fifth feature triumph of the year in their 30-lap finale. Noah Ratcliff and Cameron Rowe followed.

BIG MONEY: The Eldora (Ohio) Speedway ran two of the best paying World of Outlaws Sprint Tour events of the year and Pennsylvania racer, Brent Marks won them both.

Marks won $100,000 last Thursday, winning the forty lap Historical Big One and he came right back Saturday night to pocket another $175,000 in the 39th annual King’s Royal special on the Tony Stewart-owned Eldora half-mile oval.
