George Santos' constituents call for him to resign during D.C. protest
New York Rep. George Santos' own constituents are trying to turn up the heat on the embattled congressman, delivering petitions to House leaders on Tuesday seeking his expulsion from Congress after he admitted to fabricating parts of his life. Santos told CBS News that he was not deterred by the protests and insisted he was going to meet with the group. "That's their freedom of speech right and I'll entertain a conversation with them every single day," he said when asked whether the protests were a distraction from his work. "I represent them all equally." But when his constituents arrived outside his office...
Companies give people fake "manager" titles, and save billions
Would you rather be a front-desk clerk or "Director of First Impressions"? A barber or a "Grooming Manager"?How you answer could mean a significant difference in annual earnings. That's because companies routinely inflate workers' titles to avoid paying them in full for overtime work, according to researchers from the University of Texas and Harvard Business School. It's no secret companies go to great lengths to keep their labor costs down. What the new working paper reveals is that firms save a total of $4 billion in overtime payments a year simply by getting creative with titles. For employees, however, these inflated titles...
U.S. military seeks to recover debris from Chinese spy balloon
One day after a fighter jet shot a Chinese spy balloon into the Atlantic Ocean, cellphone video showed U.S. Navy personnel on Sunday with what appeared to be a white, deflated balloon laying across two different boats. The Pentagon assesses that the balloon was up to 200 feet tall, and its destruction created a debris field roughly 1,500 meters by 1,500 meters. After the balloon first entered U.S. airspace on Jan. 28, it flew over or near four military sites in Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska and Missouri. Republicans are furious that the balloon floated over the U.S. for a week. "He allowed a full week for the...

It was also unclear how long those balloons remained over the U.S. and what trajectory they took."I will tell you that we did not detect those threats," said Gen. Biden to tout fentanyl smuggling crackdown in State of the Union
Washington — In his second State of the Union address Tuesday night, President Biden is slated to outline a series of actions the federal government is taking to crack down on the smuggling of fentanyl along the southern border, where Mexican cartels have sought to traffic thousands of pounds of the deadly synthetic opioid into the U.S. over the past year alone.Mr. Biden is expected to argue his administration is disrupting the trafficking of fentanyl into the U.S. by increasing scanning technology at official border crossings, broadening the government's collaboration with delivery companies to identify suspicious packages and enlisting the...
Cruz: Biden "telegraphed weakness" with response to Chinese spy balloon
Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas commended President Biden on Sunday for ordering the destruction of a suspected Chinese spy balloon over the Atlantic Ocean but faulted him for waiting several days to take action, saying the president's handling of the incident "projected weakness" to Beijing.Fighter jets shot the balloon out of the sky off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday on the president's orders, one week after it was first detected over Alaska, U.S. officials said. Appearing on "Face the Nation" on Sunday, Cruz suggested that swifter and more decisive action would have sent a stronger message to Chinese...
Uncertainty plagues gun laws new and old after Supreme Court ruling
Washington — Less than a year after the Supreme Court issued its major decision expanding gun rights, the new legal test laid out by Justice Clarence Thomas in his majority opinion has reshaped the legal landscape for firearms laws and led to uncertainty over whether measures that aim to curb gun violence can survive legal scrutiny. The laws — those recently enacted in the states, as well as longstanding federal restrictions with broad support — are being tested in courtrooms from coast to coast, where judges are tasked with evaluating whether they are "consistent with the nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation.""We're...
More than half of U.S. states are moving to cut your taxes
Even as the U.S. economy shows signs of slowing down, many states around the U.S. are flush with cash, with their so-called rainy day funds estimated to reach a record high of $136.8 billion this fiscal year. And lawmakers in more than half of states are responding to their new cash cushions with similar proposals: cutting taxes. Twenty-seven states are weighing tax cuts this year, according to a recent analysis from the left-leaning Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), which termed the push "tax cut fever." Some officials are considering totally eliminating their state income tax, including in Mississippi and...
Social Security increase doesn't go far amid inflation
These days, the only way 81-year-old Judy Allen can afford her groceries is with government assistance. Even after this year's Social Security cost of living increase, she struggles to make ends meet with the $1,000 it provides her each month. With the 8.7% cost of living increase, Allen receives about $80 more per month than before. "It's really not enough for anybody," Allen said. "Our rent went up. Food goes up. So really we're not getting a raise. It evens out." Nearly 50% of Americans do not have access to retirement benefits through work, according to AARP. Neither did Allen, so she retired...
