COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - A tanker crashed on Saturday, which led to a large gasoline leak, causing I-75 and I-71 to temporarily close in both directions.
The crash happened on the Kentucky side of the Brent Spence Bridge in the southbound lanes around 11:30 p.m.
The northbound lanes began to open up around 10:15 a.m. Sunday, and the southbound lanes opened around noon.
Roebling Suspension Bridge is closed temporarily, given the number of tractor-trailers and other vehicles using it, and its low 11-ton weight limit.
A Code Red emergency alert was issued, instructing everyone living or staying within a half-mile of the scene to shelter in place.
That order was lifted late Sunday morning.
“The immediate danger is now gone,” said Covington Fire Department Battalion Chief Joe Bowman. “We’re just in the cleanup stage.”
The truck was carrying about 8,000-8,500 gallons of gasoline, and roughly 500 had leaked, according to Bowman.
He said the fuel had spilled onto the interstate and was dripping down to streets below.
The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, but it's currently unknown how the crash happened.
Several emergency, environmental, and transportation agencies worked to help contain the spill.
