Teoscar Hernandez capped a three-run rally in the bottom of the 10th inning with an RBI single to lift the Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-5 win over the visiting Kansas City Royals on Saturday.
Vinnie Pasquantino had hit a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the 10th against Jordan Romano (3-2) to give the Royals a 5-3 lead.
For Toronto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled against Joel Payamps (2-3) to score automatic runner George Springer in the bottom of the 10th. Pinch-hitter Raimel Tapia tied the game with an RBI single. Bo Bichette then singled, and Hernandez won the game with a sharp ground-ball single to left.
The Blue Jays have won two of the first three games of the four-game series against the Royals.
Toronto starter Max Castillo allowed three runs and five hits with one strikeout in three-plus innings. Royals starter Daniel Lynch allowed three runs, six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.
Kansas City’s Michael Massey led off the third with his first major-league hit, a single. Freddy Fermin’s grounder to third forced Massey at second base. Fermin took second on a groundout and scored on Bobby Witt Jr.’s single, giving the Royals a 1-0 lead.
Toronto’s Danny Jansen walked with one out in the bottom of the third. He took second on Guerrero’s infield hit, a trickler to third, and slid home safely on Alejandro Kirk’s single to left.
Edward Olivares singled to open the Kansas City fourth and scored on Ryan O’Hearn’s triple. Trevor Richards replaced Castillo and allowed Nate Eaton’s sacrifice fly, giving the Royals a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, singles by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Santiago Espinal and a walk to Jansen loaded the bases with two out. Springer’s two-run single tied the game. Jose Cuas replaced Lynch.
David Phelps pitched around two walks in the top of the sixth, The inning ended when Massey was ruled to have interfered with catcher Jansen on his attempted pickoff at second base. Royals manager Mike Matheny was ejected for his protest.
Taylor Clarke pitched around Kirk’s single in the bottom of the seventh by picking off pinch-runner Bradley Zimmer at first.
In roster moves Saturday, Toronto acquired left-handed pitcher Foster Griffin from Kansas City for right-hander Jonatan Bernal. Griffin was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. Toronto recalled right-hander Jeremy Beasley from Buffalo and designated right-hander Sergio Romo for assignment.
