Kevin Shields won the Falling Rock Classic at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.

Kevin Shields used five birdies to build a first-round lead at the Falling Rock Classic at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort on Monday.

The Mt. Lebanon native backed that effort with a pair of eagles during the final round on the Falling Rock Course Tuesday to breeze to a comfortable win. Shields shot a 5-under-par 67 during Round 1 on the Shepherd‘s Rock Course. Shields finished at 8-under 136.

Shields held a four-shot lead on Bridgeport, W.Va., native Michael Gervais and Slippery Rock pro Rob McClellan. Each shot a 1-under 71 after the first round.

Leechburg’s Dennis Munko and Gervais tied for second at 1-under, 143.

The final round was delayed by thunderstorms in the mountains near Uniontown.

Turowski ties for 50th

Penn-Trafford junior Nick Turowski is competing in the National High School Golf Association’s Boys High School Invitational at Pinehurst, N.C.

Turowski shot a 2-over 74 on Pinehurst No. 5 on Monday, a 3-over 75 on Pinehurst No. 6 on Tuesday and a 7-over 79 on Pinehurst No. 7 on Wednesday to finish with a 12-over 228.

He finished tied for 50th.

There were 333 golfers in the field.

Friendly battle to the end

You couldn’t have asked for a better finish at the Westmoreland County Golf Association’s Amateur Championship.

Greensburg native Kevin Fajt rallied from four shots down with nine holes remaining Sunday to defeat Jeannette native Ronald DeNunzio of the second playoff hole.

Fajt had birdies on No. 12 and 13, while DeNunzio lost strokes to Fajt with bogeys on Nos. 11 and 16.

A par on the par 5 No. 2 won it for Fajt, who now has won the event five times.

“It’s always nice to win the Amateur because there are so many great players in the county,” Fajt said. “It was a great battle to the finish.”
