SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS — New Jersey Blood Services [NJBS] and Hoffman’s Ice Cream are hosting the “Pint for a Pint” blood drives throughout the summer.

To encourage donations, each participating blood donor will receive a coupon for a free pint of ice cream, courtesy of Hoffman’s Ice Cream. There are four drives where this coupon is given; two at each of the Hoffman’s Ice Cream locations.

The Hoffman’s Ice Cream location in Point Pleasant, 800 Richmond Ave., will host blood drives on Thursday, July 14, and Wednesday, August 24, from 12:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The Hoffman’s Ice Cream location in Spring Lake Heights at 569 Church St. will host blood drives on Thursday, July 28 and Tuesday, August 30 from 12:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Donors can expect to have their blood pressure and temperature taken, as well as answer additional health questions before making a donation. NJBS will utilize buses as the donation center.

Hoffman’s Ice Cream has been partnering with NJBS for the past 11 years, typically raising around 280 pints of blood between the four drives.

According to Lynne Ross, account manager for NJBS, 280 pints can potentially help around 800 patients, considering the blood, platelets and plasma from one donation can be given to separate recipients.

Donations take roughly one hour, and a single donation can save multiple lives. Roughly one in seven hospital admissions require a blood transfusion. Those in need include cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies and their mothers, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia and many more.

This drive will be the first since 2019, as Hoffman’s Ice Cream blood drives have been paused since 2020 because of the pandemic.
