A teacher’s request for school supplies turned into “several hundred” educators in Loudoun County getting hundreds of dollars of classroom materials donated to them.
More than 3,300 people – teachers and community members – joined the “Adopt-A-Teacher” Facebook group benefitting Loudoun County Public School classrooms. Special education teacher Jennifer Hitchcock saw similar groups in neighboring school districts where teachers post Amazon wish lists and people can shop and ship items directly to them.
After getting boxes of items, one teacher posted she is “overwhelmed by the generosity of the community” and got “a little teary-eyed” opening the packages. Hitchcock told 7News Reporter Victoria Sanchez the “Adopt-A-Teacher” grassroots program is boosting morale.
“Have you created a list and has someone ‘adopted’ you?” Sanchez asked.
“Yes. I created a list within the first week to help with extended school year. Normally I’d purchase everything I need out of my own pocket, and someone just donated it for me,” she said.
Hitchcock received sensory items like fidgets for students with anxiety, beach balls and hula hoops. She said she shared some of the donated items to other teachers in the school.
