It's been almost a decade since Texas lawmakers created the School Marshal program, allowing Texas teachers to carry weapons inside schools.
It was in response to the shooting in Sandy Hook, Connecticut in 2012 that left 20 first graders dead.
Since Texas launched the School Marshal program, only 84 school districts out of more than 1200 have armed their staffs. That's just seven percent.
One of those districts, Hamshire-Fannett ISD, is right here in Jefferson County.
Superintendent Dwaine Augustine says the the program might not work for all school districts, but it's a good fit for Hamshire-Fannett.
He emphasizes that no staff member is forced to be the one to defend a campus, but he says those employees who volunteer to do so are highly trained to take action.
