Monday will be Portland’s warmest day this week, according to the National Weather Service, as strong high pressure and a surface thermal trough settle over the metro area.

Skies will be sunny and temperatures will make it to about 95 as measured at the Portland International Airport. Other valley areas will see high temps range from 93-96 degrees. Even the coast will get in on the warming Monday with some locations, including Astoria, likely to heat up to near 80 degrees.

The good news is it’s not expected to last long. Cooling will begin Tuesday as a shallow onshore flow develops and clouds move into the coastal areas. Portland won’t see any clouds, but under sunny skies, the marine air will help keep daytime high temperatures around 90 degrees.

A system moving southward from the Gulf of Alaska will also help to kick up breezy conditions late Tuesday afternoon especially near the Columbia River Gorge and east of Stevenson. The beaches will also feel the stronger cooling winds.

The marine surge strengthens late Tuesday night and will help Portland start Wednesday with mostly cloudy skies. Some clearing is likely by the afternoon. Daytime high temps will take a steep drop of nearly 10 degrees as the high is forecast at about 79 degrees. The coast could even see some drizzle early Wednesday.

Extended forecasts are calling for mild weather through the end of the week with a mix of clouds and sun and temperatures about average for this time of year in the low 80s.
