Man killed in 5-vehicle I-78 crash after he got out of disabled car, police say

A 23-year-old Lebanon, Pennsylvania, man died early Monday morning after a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 78 East in Berks County, Pennsylvania State Police report.

The man’s 1992 Mercury broke down just after 4:30 a.m. and was stopped partially in the right lane near mile marker 26.4 in Tilden Township, police said in a news release.

The man, who won’t be identified publicly until his family is notified of his death, was out of his vehicle and trying to flag down other drivers for help, police said.

A 2022 Toyota driven by a 25-year-old man from Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, struck the Mercury from behind, subsequently hitting the Lebanon man, police said.

The Toyota was then impacted from behind by a 2008 Honda driven by a 66-year-old Dumfries, Virginia, man, police said. There was a 47-year-old woman as a passenger in that vehicle, police said.

A 2022 Honda driven by a 20-year-old from Leesburg, Virginia, tried to slow, but hit the Toyota, police said. There was a 19-year-old woman from Ranson, West Virginia, as a passenger in that Honda, police said.

The Lebanon man was pronounced dead at the scene by the Berks County Coroner’s Office, police said.

The news release didn’t say if anyone else was hurt.

The investigation is active and police ask anyone who may have seen the crash to call state police at Hamburg at 610-562-6885 and reference incident number PA2002-895546.

State troopers were assisted by crash reconstruction and forensics personnel, police said. Union Fire Co. No. 1, Shoemakersville Fire Co. and Hamburg EMS assisted at the scene, police said.
