Nino Schurter Receives Penalty Fine at the Lenzerheide XC World Cup 2022

Jul 11, 2022
by Ed Spratt
You don t need to understand Swiss German to have an idea of what Nino Schurter was saying to his compatriot Mathias Fluckiger.

The drama keeps on coming from the Lenzerheide World Cup after Nino Schurter received a fine from the UCI following the race.

After the hectic final lap of the fifth round of the 2022 XC World Cup where Nino Schurter and Mathias Flückiger crashed on the final lap, there was a heated exchange in the finish area. Once he had crossed the line Nino Schurter went over to Mathias Flückiger where SRF captured him shouting: "You're not normal! f*ck! you shot me down." [Du bist nicht normal! f*ck! Du hast mich abgeschossen.]

Shortly after the race the UCI issued Nino Schurter with a fine for both "Inappropriate behaviour at the finish of the race" and "Failure to respect instructions of the commissaires". In the list of fines from Lenzerheide Oliver Davies of the Union team was also handed a penalty for "Failure to respect instructions of the commissaires".

We have reached out to Nino Schurter and his team for a comment on the fine and we will update this story if we hear more.

  • 56 0
FYI, the editor who wrote this piece probably just used Google Translate as I don’t think Pinkbike got someone on the team who speaks German.

The accusation of being „not normal“ would, as an idiomatic expression, more closely translate to „you’re out of your mind“.
  • 18 0
@chakaping: It might or might not. Doesn’t matter as it’s surely not what Schurter meant. In German-speaking countries the accusation of being „not normal“ is just an idiomatic way of calling someone crazy or out of their mind.
  • 42 1
@HardtailHerold: are you from east block ex communist country? I doubt and I don’t agree that this a strong insult there. I grew up and spend half of my life in one of those countries and I can assure you that, given the variety of all kinds of really rough swear words and richness of other insults, telling someone that they are “not normal” is nothing to be punished for by any means. Punishing Nino for what he said is in my opinion a bit of virtue signaling on the part of the UCI.

  • 1 0
 @MDW83: well...that's anti-climactic news. Dang!
  • 13 6
@Muscovir: I speak passable German. I don't know if the "pas normal" doping subtext carries over to German, but it's a direct, accurate translation. I'd be hesitant to translate to "you're out of your mind" or something less literal.
  • 72 0
@brianpark: Pretty cool that you speak German. I've got lots of respect for that acutally, it's definitley uncommon and it's a difficult language to learn. So I'm honestly not trying to berate you, but I'm sure that you're wrong on this one.

I'm a native German from a region adjacent to the Swiss border. I've grown up speaking an Alemannic German dialect that is very close to most versions of modern Swiss German. I personally can also understand spoken Swiss German dialects, which is definitley not common for Germans. For example, if you showed that SRF interview to someone from Berlin without any subtitles, they most likely wouldn't understand what Nino and Mathias were saying. But like I said, I grew up speaking a similar dialect, so I'm sure I can judge it's intricacies accurately.

Anyways, I can assure you that, if someone speaking that dialect, who is also very agitated, calls another person "nüt normal", he definitley means to say that the other person has lost their mind.

"Not normal" is definitley not a wrong translation, I'll give you that. In a very literal way, it's accurate. But it's missing the subtext. Like I said, expressions akin to "Du bist ja nicht mehr ganz normal" are (in this dialect) idiomatic for "Du hast ja den Verstand verloren" aka "You've lost your mind".

Wheter or not it also carries the doping subtext I feel like don't ultimately have the authority to say, because I don't know enough about roadie slang. But what Nino says in the interview leads me to believe it doesn't. He wasn't mad at Mathias because he couldn't shake him, he was mad because he thought Mathias made an error of judgement and rammed into him. Actually he also hints that Mathias might have done it deliberately.

the insult has nothing to do with Language or Translation, it is a superiority insult, it has the intention to say something like "i am superior than you and you made get pissed, but your actions are not enough to make me curse so stay in your place you filthy peasant"

hahah, i am just teasing, but that's how a lot of athletes are, it is a mind game at the end of the day, especially with these two that have known each other since little kids.

From that instagram video, "quiet" is the last thing I'd say about Luca's celebration Wink Well done to him for staying focused and racing hard to the very end. The crash might have helped him but his commitment kept him within range to take advantage of it.
  • 48 4
Looking at the comments on this and the previous article I think there are a lot of commenters who don’t realise that this wasn’t just a normal race for Shurter, if he won, which was looking likely, then he would have become the winningest World Cup xc racer of all time and done it in his home race.
This is a feat he’s been trying to do all his career then there’s the fact that there is a bit of history between the two of them.

Whilst it doesn’t excuse his behaviour it does add some mitigation.
  • 3 0
Ninos having a good season so I suspect he will pick up another win, but it’d be rough if he lost his last chance because of this. With the next generation coming up in the tanks he likely doesn’t have too much more time at the top.
  • 5 6
But surely he doesn't want it to be just given to him. I still don't know what MF actually did, but I expect all racers to race NS hard and make him actually earn that record.
  • 5 0
@MDW83: like his teammate Lars Forster beating him on Snowshoe 2019. Nino could have equalled Absalons record back then
  • 7 1
Why do a lot of people claim that he would have "likely" or "surely" won? If the two riders were close enough to get tangled up, that seems to cast quite a bit of uncertainty onto either rider's likelihood of winning.

Not trying to play devil's advocate here, just curious. I'm trying to familiarize myself with the racing scene of the sport. I've been following the downhill and enduro since this season started, but this is the first time I've watched the XC races.

Based on Mathias and Nino's comments post-race, clearly, Mathias screwed up with his "oh well, that racing" whereas, Nino was very specific about Mathias' race behavior. Nino has every right to be furious.
  • 5 1
Not to mention Hatherly's comment about "I'd rather get on the podium fairly" (paraphrasing). Might be reading too much into his comment but all the post-race reactions seem to point to MF being at fault with a reckless/impossible pass.

FWIW it definitely wasn't a guaranteed win for Nino in a sprint finish, at least IMO. MF didn't seem to have too much trouble going with Nino's attacks on the last 2 laps. Seems like a lack of skill, miscalculation, or a plain old grudge (or a combo of the three) for MF to go from a good shot at 1st to nearly off the podium.

Good statement by UCI in connection with Shurter - Flueckiger polemic. Certainly is a bike race and they are fighting for the win... no one has to yield, both are entitled to overtake.
  • 6 0
@Mac1987: Seriously! All these commentators saying they need GoPros or point reductions for making dangerous passes probably have some corporate jobs where their legacy is creating a policy because something bad happened once.

The sports dangerous. The UCI usually sucks with policies like banning super tucking and aero positions on the road. Don’t suggest things to make them do stupid shit to mtb.

In both cases of Nino passing Flukiger he took a wicked line and pushed flukiger to the outside. If Flukiger had not braked or fought harder it would have resulted in a crash. Which is probably what happened yesterday.

Stoked to watch Andorra!

As a fan of hockey, i can't believe this receives a fine

By ek UCI...wonder if they looked at the crash to understand why Nino was so upset.
  • 2 1
Wonder how a mountain bike rider fight would look like compared to a bunch or roadie climbers going at it?
  • 2 1
Who cares. People get upset in about every professional race. Par for the course.
  • 1 2
I can just imagine how a roadie race is. Lots of contact and smack talk and hurt feelings I'm sure.

@conv3rt: how sure are you though? Sure like you know or sure like you have never seen or experienced it and have no idea(aka Pinkbike sure)…?
  • 2 0
@warmerdamj: my sister's cousin's pilates coach said that her dog walker's brother rode a bicycle once...that
kind of sure. which makes it one level above pinkbike sure.

Close friends who raced in CAT 1 used to tell me stories of elbows, unkind overtakes, harsh words, and broken friendships, baby. But hey, that's racin'. So no, not experienced myself but from a credible source. Shirley this is true. Or am I wrong and road racing is nothin but hugs and bum slaps?

What I DID personally experience was mass start nordic ski racing at the post secondary provincial level. Kind of like being thrown into a tumble dryer full of angry sharp objects that don't care about your safety or desire to win. Sometimes you stab, sometimes you get stabbed. Often both.

 Video, or it didn’t happen.

Sorry to poke again, but what about the SLAP ? That's allowed, but swearing gets fined? Interesting Smile )))

There was no slap; not sure where people are getting this from.

@bentopi: basically from being there and seeing.
  • 3 1
@Wanarama: where you there and saw it? or do you know of someone? I feel like he would get suspended 100% if he had done it.
  • 4 1
@bentopi: Yes we were there and saw it.
  • 3 3
@Wanarama: you saw who slap who? At thw finish line? I saw video and it showed nino standing over mathias yelling at him while mathias sat. Please explain.

@jtorrento: There were more people talking about this. I was there too, but I did not see that, as I was too busy taking pictures, but a few people around me were in shock having seen this.

There is a lot of PR-istic talk and euphemistical language here. Nino looked like he wanted to KILL Flückiger. What they did on the podium was for the crowds, as they knew it slipped a bit too far this time. It looked like that to me, and I was 10m to the right of this whole scene. But there is as much bad blood there as there is water in the Amazon.

I also noticed there is a whole lot of bias towards Nino. I actually remember pretty well how the on-spot commentator kissed the as of every Elite Swiss rider (which I totally get, given the context, it's cool) and highlighting how special it was that Filippo Colombo was even a rider on a Swiss team (BMC) and I was like ”Dude, Flückiger won you 4 World Cups since 2019 and he is riding for the relatively small Swiss brand Thömus! Why do you deliberately ignore that, it is not fair!”. The Nino fanhood in Switzerland is something like religion, I guess, and facts matter less.

Flückiger, on the other hand, was visibly shaken and he knew he f*cked up and this will not go away easily.I'm sure his popularity on the Lenzerheid did not grow, also given the fact that Nino is literally from two valleys away.

@jtorrento: How can I explain...he raised his arm and hit him. Now whether this was a slap, smack, hit, a push or just XC love, it can be debated.
I have no bias here, I didn't know who these guys were until Sunday, but I happend to be there at that moment.
My pain is I had my popcorn ready and feet up for the news, and nothing !
Def following the rest of the XCO world cup!
