Kenny Loggins talks 'Danger Zone', reunion with Messina and new memoir

LOS ANGELES (KNX) – From his partnership with Jim Messina to his solo career in the 1980s, Kenny Loggins has written and performed songs that have stood the test of time.

One of those songs, included “Danger Zone” from the 1986 classic, Top Gun.

In an interview with KNX In Depth, Loggins recalled asking Tom Cruise if the hit song would be in the now released sequel.

“We both ended up on the Jimmy Kimmel show about six years ago…and I said, ‘So I hear you’re doing the new Top Gun’ and he said, ‘Yeah’,” Loggins said. “And I said, ‘So tell me the truth, is ‘Danger Zone’ in or out?’ And he said ‘It wouldn’t be Top Gun without ‘Danger Zone.’”

But “Danger Zone” isn’t the only highlight from Loggins’ career making a comeback. Loggins is performing with old music partner, Jim Messina, to celebrate their 50th anniversary as a duo.

“I was joking with a friend I said, ‘Well you know, somebody asked if I wanted to do a summer tour with Loggins and Messina and I said, ‘That’s like asking me to move-in with my ex-wife’,” he said. “There are certain aspects to it that you don’t necessarily want to revisit, but Jimmy and I do well. We’re business partners.”

In addition to the tour, Loggins is sharing his stories in his memoir, Still Alright. Loggins said the writing process allowed him to look back on the relationships he had with those in his life, including with Messina, his ex-wife, and his family.

“There were quite a few awarenesses, if you will, about relationships that I had, including my mom and dad,” he said. “I saw my dad’s issue with sleeping pills and then, subsequently, to have to take a dexamyl to be able to go to work. I never got any of the dexamyl part of it, but I got into the benzo thing and I saw it was very much a throwback ton what they call ‘generational pain.’”

Loggins and Messina will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl on July 15th and 16th.
