FORECAST: Some showers on tap Saturday

A warm front will nudge closer tonight, increasing cloud cover overnight. This blanket of clouds will keep it from getting too chilly tonight, with lows in the upper 40s.

Overcast skies will persist on Saturday as this warm front sweeps by. A low-pressure center will pass across the Great Lakes, producing light showers from Michigan to Pennsylvania. A few showers will hang on and turn things briefly soggy west of I-81 late tomorrow morning. Before reaching too far east, most of these showers will fall apart in drier air toward DC and the I-95 corridor, meaning a totally dry Saturday with cool temperatures in the 60s being on tap. Once this warm front has passed, southerly winds will ramp up quickly into Sunday, shooting up temperatures 20+ degrees to end the weekend. We’ll go from spring to summer with the snap of a finger as highs reach the 80s under partly cloudy skies to end the weekend.

This massive swing in temperatures will be a shock to the system, but it won’t be the peak of the heat. On Monday, we will climb even more, potentially hitting 90 degrees for the first time this calendar year. If so, these temperatures will push records and make it feel sweltering to begin the week. A weak frontal boundary will swing by on Tuesday, and while nothing looks concerning yet, isolated storms are likely to fire up and gain strength in the energy-filled atmosphere because of the heat. It won’t cool down behind the storms on Wednesday before a potentially stronger front arrives and produces more showers and storms near the end of next week.
