KETTERING — Women’s Med Center in Kettering said hundreds of their patients are now being referred to an Indianapolis abortion clinic.

This is after the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, sending abortion laws back to the state.

The same day the Supreme Court made its decision, Ohio’s Heartbeat Law went into effect.

News Center 7 reached out to Women’s Med Center to see how this new law is impacting their practice.

It bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, with the exception of if the pregnancy threatens the mother’s life or if a heartbeat is not detected.

In a statement, a spokesperson said women wanting an abortion can do a pre-operation appointment in Kettering before being referred to their Indianapolis facility.

“We are seeing twice as many patients as we normally would, well over 200 patients just this week in three days’ time. The majority of patients are from Ohio,” the spokesperson said.

The statement went on to say this new system is creating hardships for women from low-income families who may not be able to afford to travel two hours to receive abortion services.

Currently, Indiana’s law bans abortions after 22 weeks of pregnancy.
