Training camp will be upon us in just a few short weeks! As camp breaks, players can begin to fight for a spot on the 2022 Green Bay Packers. For some players, they will need to splash early and often to move their way up the depth chart. For others, it’s more about showing that they are ready for the bigger role the team has envisioned for them. In a sea of competition, there are three young Packers that must establish themselves quickly if they are going to be a part of the team this year.

Shawn Davis

Shawn Davis is looking to put his rookie year behind him. A 5th round pick last year of the Indianapolis Colts, Davis failed to make their 53 man roster and was quickly cut from their practice squad. After that, he then spent most of his rookie season on the Packers practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster in December but only played sparingly in the season finale on special teams. During OTAs and minicamp, Davis was the first safety off the bench. The Packers clearly think they have something in him. If he can make some impact plays in early practices, especially when he is with the ones, he could position himself towards a permanent stay as the #3 safety.

Tyler Davis

The talk of the coaches the past six weeks has been Tyler Davis. Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst both have went out of their way to praise the young tight end. Based on that praise, coupled with the uncertain nature of the Tight End depth chart this year, opportunities abound for the athletic Davis. He isn’t a completely new face to the Packers. After joining the Packers in September, he played sparingly for the Packers, mostly on special teams but did log some offensive snaps during the later part of the season. If he can build on his relationship with Rodgers and show mastery of the playbook, the Packers could have discovered a diamond in the rough.

Tipa Galeai

Not a new face to the Packers at all, Tipa Galeai enters his third year with the Packers at a crossroads. After spending his 2020 rookie year on the practice squad, in 2021 he was promoted to the active roster and showed some pass rush ability as well as being utilized on special teams. With the Packers edge rushing room, there weren’t very many opportunities his first two years. That’s very different this year, with the 3rd pass rusher being completely up for grabs. As a matter of fact, new outside linebackers coach Jason Rebrovich has said that he prefers having a four man rotation at edge if possible. Galeai can seize this opportunity with a strong preseason, but will need to start fast to avoid being pushed down the depth chart.

Overall, it’s so refreshing to be talking about training camp and the opportunities that these players have. In just a month we’ll begin learn more about each one of these player and others. In just a few weeks, the 2022 Green Bay Packers will have players looking to prove themselves.
