A confused driver entered the Bethany parade route and nearly hit children.
Bethany police said the elderly driver entered the parade route from Beaver and that there was not a barricade blocking the street at the location. They said the area the drive was is one-way but the driver became confused and ended up in the parade.
The driver entered the parade during the Fourth of July celebration in Bethany and nearly hit children as they sped through.
Families, friends and young children were out enjoying the Bethany Freedom Festival parade over the weekend when out of nowhere, the car barreled down the parade route.
Small children were just inches away from getting hit.
"It’s a miracle that none of the kids were injured," said Melissa Adame, a witness.
Adame was out at the parade with friends and recorded the video.
"This car, we don’t know where it came from. It was not part of the parade," Adame said.
Just moments before the car came through, she said a float in the parade was throwing candy to the children, drawing them into the street and inches from danger.
"Obviously they are going to run and get the candy. The tire almost ran over this kid's hand," Adame said.
Police were able to stop the driver a short time later and get them off the route. Adame said that even though no one was hit, the experience still put a damper on a weekend of celebration.
"Awful, we didn’t enjoy the rest of the show," Adame said.
Bethany police did not ticket the driver and it was completely an accident.
