The Fresno Humane Animal Services is at capacity facing a crisis with an influx of over 300 dogs between its county and city animal centers.

"We're definitely reaching numbers we haven't seen before for many reasons," said Kylie Ortega, programs coordinator for the Fresno Humane Animal Services.

The reasons center around the ongoing pandemic and time of year.

"After the Fourth of July we always have an influx of animals that have been lost from their homes because of fireworks," said Ortega. "Summertime is usually just a busy time for us as well. This is the time where we really need the most help."

Fresno Humane is asking the community to help foster or adopt from its large dog populations, those dogs weighing between 30 to 35 lbs. They ask those who do choose to take home a large dog to provide enough space for the dog.

By choosing to foster a dog, those in the community are helping to relieve the strain on the Animal Center to house the constant stream of strays it receives on a daily basis.

"A great way to volunteer is to volunteer from home by becoming a foster -- spend a little bit of time. You don't have the long-term commitment of keeping the animal forever but you can keep that animal out of the shelter; keep it healthy where it can be awaiting unification with its owner or rescue or even adoption," said Tracy Crutchfield, shelter manager with the Fresno Humane Animal Services.

If interested in becoming a foster care parent to a dog, Fresno Humane will provide supplies including crates, collar, leashes, and food.

"All you need to provide is your home, time, and love," said Ortega.
