PORTLAND (WGME) -- If you like puppies and have free time, this might be the gig for you.
A nonprofit that trains guide dogs for the visually impaired is looking for volunteers.
"Guiding Eyes for the Blind," based out of New York, is looking for people to help train puppies at its Maine locations in Bath, Brunswick and Freeport.
The training takes about 15 to 16 months, and trainers say you'll have to build your life around them during that time.
"In the end, yes, you say goodbye to this dog,” volunteer puppy raiser Camille Clifford said. “You don't get to keep them, unless they come back to you, but you know when you're given this puppy at eight weeks old that they're special and they're meant to do something special, and that's why we do it."
The trainers say COVID slowed down everything they do, and now they have a big need for raisers to get their operation back on track.
