What is City Walk in Birmingham?

From July 7-17, The World Games Plaza will occupy the new City Walk in Birmingham.

But what is City Walk?

It’s a 1.5-mile linear park that stretches from 15th Street North to 25th Street North under the Interstate 59/20 overpass bridges.

It’s a 31-acre, 10-block project built on a master plan by Barge Design Solutions, working with the Alabama Department of Transportation.

During the design process, the designers welcomed suggestions on how to better connect the community under the interstate.

Popular requests included a dog park, a food truck area, sports fields, children’s playgrounds, a water feature, a skateboard park, pickleball courts, a biergarten and open-air classrooms, all part of the finished product.

It also features multi-colored night lights and green spaces, ping pong tables and a labyrinth walk design. Labyrinth walking is an ancient practice of spiritual contemplation, entering and following a serpentine path while focusing on a spiritual question or prayer.

“This is an exciting moment for the Birmingham community,” said Bob Higgins, president and CEO of Barge Design. “This project is a true reflection of what community is all about, delivering a vision for positive growth in an extraordinary way that benefits everyone.”

During the World Games, City Walk will be open to pedestrian traffic and stages are set up that will host free concerts and other activities.
