Destini Smothers, the mother of defendant Kareem Flake’s two children, went missing in November 2020. Four months later, her body was discovered in the trunk of a car that had been abandoned in South Jamaica, Queens.

Smothers was last seen at a bowling alley in Troy, N.Y. with Flake.

Four months after she disappeared a tow truck was working to move an abandoned car at the intersection of 134th Avenue and 151st Place.

The car had a flat tire, so the tow truck operator opened the truck to look for a spare. Instead, he found the decomposing remains of Smothers with a gunshot wound to her head.

Police determined the car belonged to Flake, and he was arrested in Florida last April.

“On the run for more than year, this defendant is now in custody and charged with the brutal murder of his girlfriend, who was also the mother of his two young children,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. “This is the worst possible outcome for any individual experiencing intimate partner violence, and we express our condolences to the victim’s family.”

Prosecutors charged Flake with kidnapping, murder and related offenses.

He faces 25 years-to-life in prison if convicted.

His next court date is slated for August 11.
