This Winery on Delco’s Doorstep Made Top 25 List of PA Wine Producers

A Chadds Ford winery in the Brandywine Valley made a top 25 list for producing and selling the most gallons of wine in Pennsylvania, writes Paul Vigna for pennlive.com.

Chaddsford Winery at 632 Baltimore Pike in Chadds Ford, Chester County came in 16th in wine production in 2019, the latest year figures were available, producing 33,082 gallons.  It came in 12th in the number of gallons sold, at 36,690 gallons sold in 2020. 

Chaddsford Winery has been producing dry, sweet and sparkling wines since 1982. It uses growers from Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland, and produces 24,000 cases of wine annually, according to its website.

Between 300 and 400 businesses make and sell wine and/or cider in Pennsylvania.

Most are family farms, but “mom-and-pop” urban producers are growing.

There was a surplus of 600,000 gallons of wine/cider made in Pennsylvania in 2020 from a sales downturn from the pandemic.

About 3.5 million pounds of fruit was brought in from outside the state for production at Pennsylvania’s wineries.

About 30% of Pennsylvania wines were made from out-of-state fruit.

Also, there are almost 100 wineries licensed in Pennsylvania that sold no wine in 2020.
