HARING TWP., Mich. (WWJ) – A Northern Michigan man is facing a long list of charges after Michigan State Police found him sleeping in a Walmart parking lot over the weekend with meth in his car.

Randy Lee Smith of Manton has been charged with one count each of possession of methamphetamine, driving with a suspended license (second or subsequent offense), operating a vehicle without insurance and the unlawful use of a license plate. He also was issued a notice for habitual offender, fourth offense.

MSP troopers from the Cadillac Post got a call around 7 p.m. Saturday that a man was sleeping in a silver Saturn Ion in the parking lot of a Walmart in Haring Township, just north of Cadillac.

The caller told police the man had been sleeping in the car for more than an hour and they were concerned for his well being.

The trooper showed up and found Smith sleeping in the car with the windows rolled down. When the trooper woke him up, Smith seemed confused, according to MSP.

Officials say the license plate on the Saturn came back to a Chevy Tahoe belonging to a person living in Owosso and a file check indicated there was no registration issued to the Saturn.

The trooper then discovered Smith was in possession of meth and he was placed under arrest and taken to the Wexford County Jail.

Smith was arraigned in the 84th District Court in Wexford County and given a $5,000 cash/surety bond. His next scheduled court appearance is on July 19.
