THE POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE HOPES YOU RECOGNIZE KEVEN SPANEL. DEPUTIES SAY HE RAN AWAY WHILE ON MEDICAL FURLOUGH THIS AFTERNOON. ALEXANDRA: KETV NEWSWATCH 7’S ALEX MCLOON IS LIVE WITH THE HOURS LONG SEARCH FOR SPANEL TONIGHT. ALEX? REPORTER: IOWA LAW ENFORCEMENT STARTED LOOKING FOR SPANEL IN AND AROUND THIS CORN FIELD SOUTH OF THE POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY JAIL AROUND NOON TODAY. THE OMAHA POLICE HELICOPTER AND DRONES WEREN’T ABLE TO FIND HIM. OFFICIALS COULDN’T TELL US WHERE HE MIGHT BE HEADING, BUT DEPUTIES, STATE TROOPERS, AND COUNCIL BLUFFS POLICE SPENT ABOUT TWO HOURS AROUND THE FIELD. THE POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS SPANEL IS A FEDERAL INMATE UNDER FEDERAL CONTROL AT THE COUNTY JAIL. HE WAS SUPPOSED TO GET BACK TO THE JAIL AROUND NOON, BUT WHILE A FRIEND WAS DRIVING SPANEL BACK, HE ESCAPED FROM THE CAR AND RAN INTO THE FIELD. >> IF YOU DO LOCATE HIM, PLEASE CALL 911. DON’T APPROACH HIM, JUST CALL 911 AND WE WILL HANDLE THAT. REPORTER: SPANEL IS FACING FEDERAL DRUGS AND WEAPONS CHARGES. A SPOKESPERSON SAYS RIGHT NOW, THERE IS NO REASON TO THINK HE IS ARMED AND DANGEROUS, BUT IF YOU SEE HIM, DON’T APPROACH HIM, CALL 911 OR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT. Iowa law enforcement is searching for a federal inmate who was released on medical furlough by a federal judge, according to authorities.The Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office said 59-year-old Keven Spanel was last seen in Council Bluffs wearing a black shirt and black shorts. Upon his return from furlough, Spanel exited his friend's vehicle near the jail and ran into a cornfield."There's no reports of him trying to injure anybody or hurt anybody," Sergeant Jim Doty told KETV NewsWatch 7.Spanel is charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.If you have information about Spanel's whereabouts, contact 911.More headlines
