TALLAHASSEE -- The family of a girl bitten by a nine-foot shark last week says she is recovering after surgery to amputate her right leg.
Tallahassee Memorial Hospital says doctors used part of 17-year-old Addison Bethea's lower right leg to reconstruct her upper leg and allow it to accept a prosthesis.
The family says on a Facebook page that the surgery took place Wednesday morning and went well.
The teenager was scalloping with relatives at Keaton Beach Thursday when the nine-foot shark bit her on the right thigh. She and her brother, a first responder, pounded on the shark until it released her.
