WILLIAMSPORT - Major League Baseball’s saves leader and the holder of the records for most stolen bases, runs and unintentional walks are coming to the Little League World Series in August.
Mariano Rivera will be the grand marshal of the Grand Slam Parade on Aug. 15 and Rickey Henderson will speak at the championship luncheon on Aug. 26.
Rivera, who served as the New York Yankees closer for 17 seasons, also will speak at grand slam breakfast on Aug. 16 at the Bald Birds Brewery in Jersey Shore.
Henderson also will participate in the Williamsport Welcomes the World downtown block party on Aug. 26 and the following day serve as a coach for the annual Challenger Division game at the world series.
He holds the single season record for stolen bases (130 in 1982) and is the only player in American League history to steal 100 bases in a season, a feat he accomplished three times.
The appearance of both first ballot Hall of Famers was arranged by the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce and its visitors bureau.
A question-and-answer session will be held with Rivera and Henderson following their speeches at the breakfast and luncheon, respectively.
Tickets for both cost $30 and are available through the chamber at 570-326-1971 or www.williamsport.org. There was no fee to watch the parade or attend the block party.
The world series, which for the first time will have 20 teams, will run from Aug. 17 through Aug. 28.
The series was not held in 2020 because of COVID-19 and last year it was limited to U.S. teams. The 75th anniversary of the series is being marked this year.
