Central Clarion Wildcat Breckin Rex Concludes Scholastic Football Career In 7th Annual Frank Varischetti Classic

Central Clarion’s Breckin Rex concluded his high school football career by participating on the South Squad in the 7th Annual Frank Varischetti All-Star Game on Friday, July 1st. The game which features recently graduated senior players, was held at Frank Varischetti Stadium in Brockway as part of the Brockway Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. The South Squad is mainly made up of plalyers from teams from the old Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference (KSAC), with the North’s players hailing mainly from schools in the old Allegheny Mountain League (AML).

Breckin, who played his junior and senior seasons for the Wildcats following his freshman and sophomore years with the Clarion Area Bobcats, was named the starting running back for the South and saw several series on offense, before leaving the game with an injury.

Breckin was very excited to be selected to be part of the South Team, which lost to the North by a close 21-13 score.

Breckin really enjoyed the week of practice leading up to the game. He enjoyed getting to play with some of his friends from over the years that were rivals during the football season, and was really ready to take this opportunity and show what he could do before leaving for Juniata College to play for the Eagles.

He was really upset after the injury as he was hoping to help the South come away with a win. For Breckin, it was a great opportunity and he loved the coaching staff and the whole process leading up to the game.

The South jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 10:16 on the clock in the first. Redbank Valley’s Bryson Bain hooked up with fellow Bulldog Marquese Gardlock on a thirty-seven yard touchdown pass. Keystones Nick Cosper was successful on the extra point.

Ridgway’s Dominic Allegretto, who was named the North’s Offensive Player of the Game, scored three straight touchdowns. The first came on a forty-one punt return at 5:24 of the second. Smethport’s Noah Lent was successful on the point after and the score was tied 7-all.

Allegretto ran it in from two yards out, with 1:44 left in the half and Lent was good on the kick, giving the North a 14-7 lead at the break.

Allegretto’s final touchdown came at 5:10 of the third, with Lent successful on the kick again, for a 21-7 North lead.

Karns City’s Luke Garing, who was named the South’s Offensive Player of the Game, took the ball in for a score with 5:27 left in the game. The kick was unsuccessful and the North’s lead was cut to 21-13.

The game was called with 2:25 left, due to lightning.

Defensive Players of the Game were Christian Kirk from DuBois for the South and Ridgway’s Hunter Wall.

(I was very impressed by this group and felt I needed to share a photo. As soon as it was announced that the National Anthem would be played they were right to their feet, hands over their hearts and no clowning around. I heard no disparaging words about anything on the field from them during the game. And one of them even did some spotting for me.)

Prior to the game various businesses and organizations presented $1,000 scholarships to twenty players. The scholarships to date total $101,000.
