The company is waiting for approval from the federal government to merge with Kansas City Southern.
City Administrator, Decker Ploehn, says the $3 million deal is a realistic compromise that'll help pay for mitigation in the future. Problems with the merger include an increase in traffic delays, noise, and lack of access to properties between the railroad tracks and the Mississippi River.
Ploehn says he and other Bettendorf staff did a lot of research to determine what would be a fair settlement. And the deal allows the city to decide how to use the money instead of the federal government.
Several months ago, Canadian Pacific began negotiating with cities and towns along its routes. This summer, the Surface Transportation Board may release its draft Environmental Impact Statement.
Other municipalities located along the route include Davenport, LeClaire, and Muscatine.
