West Palm Beach water customers may notice a change to the taste and smell of their drinking water beginning on Thursday.

The city's Department of Public Utilities is temporarily changing its disinfection process. The amount of chlorine that is pumped into the water system is being increased as a preventative maintenance process to help ensure the drinking water quality and safety standards are maintained.

The process will continue through July 27 and customers may want to keep an open container of drinking water in their refrigerator for a few hours to allow the chlorine to dissipate.

You may also notice some discoloration or cloudiness in the water.

Those on kidney dialysis should contact their doctor, and owners of tropical fish "are advised to seek professional advice.''

More than 120,000 customers get their water from the City of West Palm Beach, including residents of Palm Beach.
