PORTLAND — As part of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s continued commitment to supporting the prevention and treatment of cancer and the work of the Maine Children’s Cancer Program (MCCP), 13-year-old Cameron Frisone was honored as an Anthem Hero at Hadlock for the courage he has displayed battling leukemia at a young age.

Cameron, of Rockland, is the second of four Anthem Heroes at Hadlock to be recognized during the 2022 season. The ceremony took place prior to the July 2 Portland Sea Dogs game at Hadlock Field.

“Cameron has shown such perseverance and positivity during his cancer battle over the last year, and we are all inspired by his fight against this disease,” said Denise McDonough, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine, in a news release. “We’re especially proud to support the Maine Children’s Cancer Program and the good work they do to treat kids like Cameron.”

In May 2021, Cameron began feeling extremely fatigued, and his parents noticed that he was out of breath even at rest and his heart would beat rapidly when walking. After a visit to the emergency room and having labs drawn, Cameron was admitted to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, where he was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of 12.

Cameron went from attending baseball practices and games with friends to having a view of Hadlock Field from his room at the hospital. Despite enduring further complications, after one month of treatment Cameron’s bone marrow was found to be free of cancer cells. Today, Cameron is in the maintenance phase of his treatment and will be for the next year and a half. He has been able to return to doing some of the things he loves the most: playing guitar, spending time with friends, and managing his school baseball team.

“Anthem’s support provides such a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the bravery of our patients,” said Grace Jandro, philanthropy coordinator at the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. “In addition to raising funds and awareness for our program, the Anthem Heroes at Hadlock ceremonies bring hope and create special memories for young warriors just like Cameron.”

The Anthem Heroes at Hadlock program provides children who have battled a serious medical condition a once-in-a-lifetime experience at Hadlock Field. Each honoree takes a celebratory home run lap around the bases of Hadlock Field prior to a Portland Sea Dogs home game. The children and their families also receive a number of Sea Dogs souvenirs and other VIP privileges at the game. The Anthem Heroes at Hadlock program will recognize two more courageous kids this season prior to the games on July 17 and August 12.
