DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — A man lost his life Sunday night in Danville after he reportedly stepped into traffic along Piney Forest Road and was hit by a vehicle.

According to Capt. Steve Richardson with the Danville Police Department, the incident was called in at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Sunday, July 3 from the 1200 block of Piney Forest Road.

Richardson tells WFXR News that a person stepped into a lane of traffic and the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado “attempted evasive maneuvers,” but was unable to avoid hitting him.

The pedestrian — identified as 67-year-old Raymond Saunders of Danville — was pronounced dead at the scene, the captain says.

As for the driver of the Chevrolet, he was only described as a 42-year-old man from Pittsylvania County.

As of this writing, Richardson says no charges have been filed or are pending in connection with Sunday night’s incident.

This news comes after Virginia State Police reported a total of nine deadly crashes across the Commonwealth’s highways over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, including a crash involving a pedestrian in Danville.
