Community holds vigil for football coach, teacher killed in downtown Sacramento shooting
TY: NEW TONIGHT, AN OUTPOURING OF EMOTIONS AT A SACRAMENTO HIGH SCHOOL. HUNDREDS CAME OUT TO REMEMBER A TEACHER AND COACH WHO WAS KILLED IN A SHOOTING OVER THE FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND. GREG NAJEE GRIMES WAS ONE OF FIVE MEN SHOT YESTERDAY MORNING IN DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO. EDIE: THIS WAS THE SCENE AT INDERKUM HIGH SCHOOL TONIGHT TO REMEMBER GRIMES. HE GRADUATED FROM THE SCHOOL IN 2008 AND HE WAS THE FIRST STUDENT-ATHLETE TO RECEIVE A SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE SCHOOL. YOU CAN SEE HIS FAMILY AND SO MUCH PAIN. HE THEN WENT TO BOISE STATE BEFORE RETURNING TO INDERKUM TO BECOME A TEACHER AND ASSISTANT FOOTBALL COACH. >> I AM VERY HAPPY TO SEE THESE STANDS FILLING UP WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE COMING TOGETHER TO GRIEVE TOGETHER. YOU KNOW, IT’S REALLY SAD AND TRAGIC WHEN WE LOSE PEOPLE, ANYBODY. ESPECIALLY PEOPLE WHO GIVE SO MUCH BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITIES. EDIE: DURING TONIGHT’S VIGIL, COMMUNITY LEADERS ALSO CALLED FOR AN END TO ALL THE GUN VIOLENCE. AND FOR ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THIS CASE TO COME FORWARD. TY: AND POLICE ARE CONTINUING TO SEARCH FOR CLUES IN THE DEADLY SHOOTING. IT HAPPENED NEAR THE CORNER OF 16TH AND L STREET, JUST BEFORE 2:00 MONDAY MORNING. INVESTIGATORS FOUND NEARLY A DOZEN SHELL CASINGS AT THE CRIME SCENE. THEY HAVE WATCHED A NUMBER OF VIDEOS AND SPOKE TO WITNESSES WHO SAW THE SHOOTING. POLICE HAVE SET UP A Q.R. CODE, TO COLLECT INFORMATION RELATED TO THIS SHOOTING. DETECTIVES ARE LOOKING FOR PHOTOS, CELL PHONE VIDEO, AND WITNESS ACCOUNTS TO UPLOAD AS EVIDENCE. Greg Najee Grimes was killed in a shooting in downtown Sacramento early Monday morning.The shooting happened around 2 a.m. near a nightclub in the area of 15th and L streets, Sacramento police said.Four other men were injured in the shooting and are in stable condition.| MORE | Family mourns Greg Najee Grimes after downtown Sacramento shootingGrimes played football at Inderkum High School for four years, later going on to play at Boise State before returning to Inderkum as a coach and instructor. You know, it's really sad and tragic when we lose people, anybody, but especially people who give so much back to their community,” said Sacramento Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby. During the vigil, community leaders also called for an end to all gun violence, and for anyone with information about the case to come forward.

Grimes played football at Inderkum High School for four years, later going on to play at Boise State before returning to Inderkum as a coach and instructor.

On Tuesday, the community held a vigil for Grimes at Inderkum High School.

“I am very happy to see these stands filling up with people who are coming together, to grieve together. You know, it's really sad and tragic when we lose people, anybody, but especially people who give so much back to their community,” said Sacramento Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby.

During the vigil, community leaders also called for an end to all gun violence, and for anyone with information about the case to come forward.
