HIGHLAND PARK, IL (WSAU) — Monday’s incident in Highland Park, IL may have become a two-state incident on a whim, according to police who interviewed the suspect.
On Wednesday we learned that Robert E. Crimo III fled the scene in suburban Chicago and drove to Madison, where he ditched his cell phone in an attempt to throw investigators off his tail. Crimo told investigators that he saw another Fourth of July celebration in progress when he got to town, causing him to contemplate another shooting. But the 21-year-old decided against it because he didn’t feel he was prepared to carry out the attack.
Crimo was arrested when he returned to Highland Park. On Wednesday a judge ordered him held without bond as he faces multiple counts of homicide. Seven people have died in connection with the shooting, several others remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Investigators say he’s confessed to the shooting spree, and additional charges are likely to be filed in the case including the possibility of one count of attempted first-degree homicide for each person that was injured.
More than 80 shells and three magazines were left on a rooftop following the incident. Crimo then dressed in women’s clothing and blended in with those fleeing the scene before leaving town. Investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting.
