Macy Gray is facing a lot of backlash after comments she made during a recent appearance on the Piers Morgan show when the award-winning singer and actress spoke about her take on gender reassignment surgery and trans women in sports.

The “all hell broke loose” topic came about when Gray and Morgan began discussing her Juneteenth Market Watch op-ed and her controversial statement last year suggesting a change in the American flag because of her belief that the current version no longer represents democracy and freedom.

The conversation was frank in nature, with Gray addressing her views on racism and not understanding the need for the extreme hatred. Morgan then turned to the sensitivity of discussing women’s issues.

“we are in an era now where public figures are terrified to say what they think a woman is. If I asked you what a woman is, what would you say?” Morgan inquired.

Gray told Morgan that people should “let go of needing to be better than everyone else” and their “hang-ups about superiority,” which led to a discussion of gender identity and how she thinks that “he/she/they” pronoun changes that transgender individuals make are “getting a bit confusing.”

“I will say this, and everybody’s going to hate me, but as a woman, just because you go change your parts doesn’t make a woman. Sorry,” Gray told Morgan. “Like, if you want me to call you a ‘her,’ I will, because that’s what you want. But that doesn’t make you a woman, just because I call you a ‘her’ and just because you got a surgery.”

Gray said her definition of a woman is a human with natural “boobs” and a “vagina,” and those who weren’t born genetically female don’t have the same experiences.

“Being a little girl is a whole epic book and you can’t have that just because you want to be a woman,” Gray said. “It’s the truth and I don’t think you should be called transphobic just because you don’t agree. There’s a lot of judgment and throwing stones at people for just saying what it is.”

Well, as you know, the backlash was swift and fierce. Social media commenters labeled Gray “transphobic” and a “TERF” (transgender-exclusionary radical feminist — meaning a woman who doesn’t include trans women in their women’s rights advocacy), and went deeper with the name-calling, attempting to sting Gray by calling her “ignorant” and a “one-hit wonder.”

But is this fair? Is she allowed to have an opinion? Just because she doesn’t UNDERSTAND what it’s like to be a trans woman, is she not allowed to share her thoughts on what she feels as a biologically born woman?

Well, apparently, the internet majority says “hell no,” and are attacking Gray in the latest “cancel culture” trend, with some saying her words “killed what’s left of her career.”

J.K. Rowling says, however, she’s got Gray’s back. The Harry Potter billionaire, whose also faced scrutiny for comments she’s previously made about the trans community, came to Gray’s defense.

“Today feels like a good day to ensure I’ve bought @MacyGraysLife’s entire back catalogue,” Rowling tweeted.

No matter the back and forth, Gray said it’s all just a big misunderstanding.

“I have nothing but love for the LGBTQ+ and transgender community. I’ve been a supporter since day one and never a fake one,” the “I Try” singer clarified. “My statement on Piers Morgan was grossly misunderstood. I don’t hate anyone. I respect everyone’s right to feel comfortable in their bodies and live their own truth.”

Legendary actress and singer Bette Midler also faced criticism recently over a tweet in which said that trans-inclusive language is erasing the term “woman,” in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling last month to overturn of Roe v. Wade, which protected the federal right to abortion.

Cancel culture might not be as successful going after Queen Bette, but is it really necessary?

At the end of the day, it’s just damn hard being a woman – in any way, shape or form – today. We ALL are under attack so we all need to stick together.
