Accused child molester assaults female deputy during escape attempt

Fort Lauderdale, FL - An accused child molester has been arrested after assaulting a female deputy while handcuffed.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, 20-year-old Samuel Austin Shirk was arrested and booked into the Broward County Jail on Sunday.

While in custody and being questioned, Shirk asked deputies to use the restroom.

He was handcuffed and escorted by a deputy.

On the way to the restroom, Shirk attacked the deputy, who screamed for help. A detective joined in to subdue Shirk and place him in a holding cell.

Shirk is facing ten charges that include sexual assault on a person under 12 years of age, lewd and lascivious molestation, video voyeurism, displaying a firearm, battery on a law enforcement officer, and attempted escape, among others, records show.

He remains in the Broward County Jail without bond.

Investigators are concerned there may be other child victims who were assaulted by Shirk.
