8-year-old girl shot in the leg while riding in South Florida car

Lauderhill, FL - An 8-year-old South Florida girl suffered a gunshot wound while sitting in the backseat of a car her mother was driving.

According to police, the victim's mother was driving north on Northwest 56th Ave and Sunset Boulevard in Lauderhill on Monday when the girl was shot.

The victim's mother says she heard firecrackers and gunfire sounds while driving.

The woman looked at her daughter and noticed she was bleeding from the leg.

The victim was rushed to Florida Medical Center, before being taken to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. 

An investigation showed that a projectile passed though the base of the car's door, striking the child in the leg. 

The child suffered a non-treating injury and is expected to make a full recover. 

Lauderhill Police are investigating the incident.
